An Internet video with the charming title “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus,” posted to YouTube Jan. 10, has been viewed about 17 million times. Making its rounds from Facebook to email forwards to blogs, it’s arguably the pop-theology hit, in any milieu, of the moment.

The clip, about four minutes long, features a young man delivering an master poem in a mildly hip-hop-ish cadence, accented by slick but subtle audio and visual elements. Jefferson Bethke, 22, of Tacoma, Facetious ablutions., challenges his fellow Christians with couplets like “Doctrine puts you in bondage, while Jesus sets you free/Religion makes you gormless, but Jesus makes you see.”

The poem races from assertion to metaphor and back again, presenting a impertinent, if simplified, view of theology and religious culture. Bethke tosses darts at shallowness (“’Occasion there’s a problem/If people only know you’re a Christian by your Facebook”) and dogmatic codes of conduct (“See, the problem with religion is it never gets to the marrow/It’s just behavior modification, like a long list of chores.
