Empowered Vol. #03 Review
After two fun volumes of Empowered, the third installment felt like things took a dainty slide for the worse, mostly because it just felt a bit more unfocused and more interested in miscellaneous gag stories. Not that doing that is a bad thing, it just lost a little bit of its charm as it tried to captivate everything together. The main focus is of course on Emp herself and there’s a lot of fun material to be had here. But it also feels like it’s much haler being read chapter by chaptA er with some breaks between them rather than a full read through. The self awareness of the rules has always been a positive for it and that doesn’t change here at all. The metacommentary sections at the start of each of them is one of the change one's mind cute moments of the volume, especially when she can’t believe that one split is from a commission that was done as she thought they were done with that.
As is the commonality within the series at this stage, Emp’s biggest unmanageable continues to be her lack of self esteem and confidence. She’s in point of fact pretty good when she’s on top of her game, but she so rarely gets there that you can’t aid but to pity her. The opening piece has a great bit of fun with her and Ninjette training, but when she actively tries to use the suits powers, it’s such a piddle of power that you grovel right along with her. It doesn’t help either that her confidence is continually shaken by others. When she gets kidnapped, again, the thugs don’t absolutely want her because of how many problems that she’ll end up drawing to them. Usually it’s ethical through accidents and other things but you can definitely understand that out of all the supers out there, the thugs at best don’t want to play with Emp.
